We did catch up and share a meal with Scott and Claire in Melbourne, when he was undergoing experimental treatment, after all the chemotherapy options in Adelaide had proved ineffective. He must have felt that his body was under relentless and overwhelming attack; he could not even have a salad for lunch because of the threat of infection from any uncooked food. I expected to see in Scott signs of fear , confusion and bitterness at what was happening to him. But although clearly weary, he seemed calm, taking each day as it came, staying positive and hopeful. Very brave. In the car on the way to hospital, he had gentle humorous digs at Claire, encouraging her as she grappled with driving through the centre of Melbourne. Why did a young, good, honest, faithful, hardworking guy as Scott die? We recently heard about a little girl, Katie, who, faced with a question she couldn't answer, would say sadly:"I can't know". And with our limited minds, we just can't know why Scott has been taken when we oldies, probably 'past our use-by-date', go on. I studied science and worked in the field for 40 years, learned a lot, but mostly that there is a heap more I don't know, and probably "can't know". There is one important conclusion I have come to, though--that there is a Master Designer and Constructor behind this awesome, complicated, beautiful universe. To argue otherwise is like looking under the bonnet of one of Scott and Wayne's cars and saying: "isn't amazing how all of this has come together by chance,-without any involvement or knowhow of designers, scientists, engineers, assemblers!" So if this God of ours is so loving, merciful and powerful as we believe, why did the prayers of so many of us not result in Scott being healed? I think the answer is that the end of our brief lives on earth is not the end of the story--there is more to it. We'll continue to pray that this loving God has prepared a place for Scott where there is no more suffering, or strife or sorrow, a place where Kathy can be with him,- we "can't know" when. In the meantime, Kathy, there has been healing within the family, and we'll pray too that Claire and Wayne, Corey and Cathy, Todd and Zoe will be able to help you, in small ways, in relieving something of your sorrow and loneliness in the days ahead. With love "Uncle" Rob (& "Auntie" Lee")
